The First Eye Care Appointment

The American Optometric Association recommends that your baby gets his or her first appointment at around six months old. No, your baby will not be asked to read off any letters, but our optometrist can determine if there are any potential issues to worry about. Your pediatrician will also help keep a watch for any indications of trouble and let you know if another visit is warranted.  Research has shown that the most common childhood cancer occurs in the eye in very young children.  

After the First Appointment

If Dr. Malik determines that there is a potential problem, we will recommend how often you should visit our eye care clinic. If no issues are present, you will typically need to take your child back between the ages of three and five.

It’s essential that they have an eye exam before starting school so that they have the best chance of succeeding in their studies. If eyeglasses are necessary, it’s best to get them prior to needing them to see the board.

After starting school, yearly exams are recommended to stay on top of any changes in their vision and to update their eyeglasses prescription. If you notice that your child is squinting more, having headaches or difficulty concentrating, or their teacher expresses any concerns, you might need to visit our eye doctor more often.
