The truth is that kids almost of any age can get an eye exam, but they are a little different than the ones that most adults expect to get when they make an appointment with the optometrist. Pediatric Eye Exams and Pediatric Vision Exams

Pediatric eye exams usually start by taking some measurements of the child's eyes. This is done in office with a series of machines that do not physically touch the child's eye. Measurements are taken with lasers, and the most your child will feel is a puff of air. It is possible to take all the necessary eye measurements without anything touching your child's eye.

If your child is old enough to speak, he or she will then be given a manual eye exam. These eye exams are what most people are familiar with when they think about an eye appointment, reading letters off a chart. If the child doesn't know all his or her letters, our eye doctor will use a chart with specially designed pictures.

Very young children who cannot speak can be fitted for eyeglasses based solely on the eye measurements that are taken, but using the chart gives our optometrist a different way to measure eyesight. If you think your child is experiencing vision issues, however, just getting the eye measurements is often enough information to start them on an eye care plan.
